Description

Set slightly away from the fray of Point Reyes—the site is near the Madrone group campsite. Across a road from the main campground, it's a nice option for those who want to get away, but don’t want to sleep on the ground.

Four cabins that hold up to 5 people are available. They all have electricity, platform bunk beds with mattresses, a wooden floor, covered porch, and an electric heater. It goes without saying that these book up fast, so make plans early to ensure a spot!

For bikers, the paved Cross Marin Trail bike path runs about three miles through the park, beginning near the entrance of the park. The trail is nearly level and follows the old Northern Pacific Coast Railroad right-of-way through Samuel P. Taylor and into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Hiking among the gargantuan Redwoods in Samuel P. Taylor, is a beautiful experience. There is an extensive network of hiking trails and fire roads that make it easy to explore the park. There is an easy 2 mile loop called The Pioneer Trail, which is the most popular, but for a little more excercise (and adventure), we recommend the 9-mile round-trip loop to Mount Barnabe.

For nature lovers, there is a large variety of flowers and trees, including oak, tanoak, madrone, live oak, laurel and Douglas fir. California native wildflowers include buttercups, milkmaids, and Indian paintbrush. As for animals, the most common is the black-tailed deer. There are also raccoons, striped skunks and gray foxes. Coho salmon and steelhead trout migrate up Lagunitas Creek to spawn. The fish should arrive after the first good rain storm in fall and may be visible a couple days later, once the waters have cleared.

Please be advised that there are no mattresses on the bunks. Its very hard without them, so make certain to bring your own.

Madrone Cabins

I did provide a recommendation! Here!
There are actually five cabins. The beds are wooden platforms. We brought "eggshell" foam pads, and thermarests on top of them. I would still have appreciated more padding - perhaps an air mattress?

The cabins are fantastic. Super clean. Each one has a picnic table, fire pit and fresh water spout. Great hiking trail either up from the group camp site, or directly across the street, to the main park entrance. People often cancel, so call the park 2-3 days ahead and you may get lucky.

There are four private bathrooms at the site, each with toilet and sink. In summer 2021, these were closed for drought (portajohns on site), but reopened in fall, thank goodness! Separate showers stil closed for drought.

Madrone Cabins

FYI web site says: Samuel P. Taylor State Park will no longer be providing mattresses in the cabins starting September 2nd 2019. If you have any questions please call Samuel P. Taylor State Park at (415) 488-9897.

I'd love to know what people bring to sleep on! Is a Therma-rest satisfactory or will I need something more? Description above needs updating!

The website indicates no dogs allowed. "Dogs or other pets are not allowed in the cabin area, violators may be subject to a $250 fine and/or ejection."
